Dogs make us feel good because they are hard-wired to connect with humans socially and emotionally; they just “get us.” “ Dogs are born with this innate ability to understand that we’re communicating with them and we’re trying to cooperate with them,” says researcher Hannah Salomons at Duke University.

While it seems to make sense that your best friend should comfortably sleep in bed with you, sleep researchers advise against it. They’re not suggesting that dogs are dirty (in fact, their paws are cleaner than most shoes), but owners who share their beds with their dogs have a significantly lower sleep efficiency.

However, letting your dog sleep in the same room with you can help you sleep easier, according to a new Mayo Clinic study . “Most people assume having pets in the bedroom is a disruption. We found that many people actually find comfort and a sense of security from sleeping with their pets,” says Dr. Lois Krahn of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine.

So while your dog helps you sleep more comfortably, make sure you return the favor. Study Finds searched for the consensus on the best dog beds by consulting 10 expert websites. Based on our research, here are our top five for the sweetest dreams. (Before you go shopping, though, please take your dog’s physical needs, sleeping style, and size into consideration; take their measurements for a perfect fit.)

Seven out of ten expert lists recommend the Casper dog bed. It’s a frequent “best overall” pick because it’s comfortable (memory foam!), durable, and washable. Its manufacturer mostly makes mattresses for humans, but “the US-based Casper design team placed their focus on giving the most supreme sleeping experience to your dog, too,” says Tom’s Guide.

Because it’s made with memory foam, this bed is “basically a human-grade mattress” that’s “orthopedic for older dogs to aid with their achy joints,” writes The Strategist .

As a neat add-on, the bed’s “extra layer of washable microfiber material is designed to mimic the feel of pawing at loose earth, according to the brand, so they can sink their paws into it without making a mess,” adds NBC News.

Our runner-up model is a bed for cuddly sleepers. The experts at The Strategist recommend the Cuddler for “smaller dogs that sleep curled up in a ball and need some support as well as extra warmth,” but state that it “is just as suitable for bigger dogs.”

Forbes on the other hand actually recommends the (large-sized) Cuddler especially for large dogs – and for humans who appreciate convenience : “The bed is machine-washable and even safe to toss in the dryer.”

According to the American Kennel Club , the Cuddler is “perfect for dogs who like to burrow.” And for ultimate comfort, “the oversize rug-like structure of this bed replicates the mother’s coat.” Your pup will sleep like a baby!

The Ultimate dog bed is another memory foam model. Voted “best overall” by Forbes , this bed works well for most dogs as it “ won’t buckle under the weight of your dog; instead, it’ll provide premium support, relieving aches and pains along the way. It also has a waterproof inner liner and washable, tear-resistant cover in case of accidents.”

Wirecutter and The Spruce like this model for seniors. It’s Wirecutter ’s “only pick with a dedicated opening lower to the ground than the rest of the bolster. So it’s easier for mobility-challenged dogs or older dogs to climb into than beds with huge bolsters that wrap all the way around.”

The Ultimate also offers peace of mind as its “ foam interior is CertiPUR-US certified, which means a third-party non-profit has verified that the foam used […] does not contain mercury, lead, formaldehyde, or phthalates, and won’t harm indoor air quality,” says The Spruce.

Like the Casper dog bed, the Tuft & Needle bed was designed by a manufacturer of mattresses for humans. It receives high praise for its quality and convenient design. Self lists it as one of their four best high-quality standard dog beds.

The Spruce agrees that Tuft & Needle offers high quality:  “ The Tuft & Needle Dog Bed features a foam base and, for convenience with traveling and washing, a detachable foam pad cushion […] After several weeks of testing and a few washes, our tester found the bed’s quality and color to be unchanged.”

Testers at Forbes say the Tuft & Needle is best for hard floors, where you need “extra cushioning.” “This two-piece dog bed from Tuft & Needle has a molded polyurethane foam base that provides a sturdy and supportive sleeping surface .”

With a total of ten recommended Furhaven beds, this manufacturer belongs on our list, even though the experts couldn’t agree on just one model. Out of “dozens of options” by the brand, CNET ’s canine tester preferred the sofa bed model, CNET’s budget pick.

Self recommends two Furhaven models, the Minky Plush Velvet Luxe Lounger Contour Dog Pillow – “available in several different fill styles, including cooling gel foam and orthopedic memory foam” – and the Plush & Suede Orthopedic Sofa Cat & Dog Bed.

The Spruce also recommends two models, the Plush & Suede as “best overall” because it “ is supportive, roomy, and easy to clean” and the Snuggery Burrow Dog Bed “with a soft, flexible hood attached to [the] bed” as the “best cozy.”
