YREKA, Calif. — Officials are searching for more potential victims of the McKinney fire as improving weather conditions allowed firefighters to gain some ground on California’s largest blaze of the year.
About 1,700 firefighters battling the 55,493-acre blaze were contending with triple-digit heat and possible thunderstorms that could set off dangerous conditions. There were about 10 other smaller fires burning in Klamath National Forest.

Hundreds of evacuees have left Ukraine's Donetsk region days after the government issued an order to evacuate as soon as possible. Continued fighting in the region and potential shortages of heating, electricity and water have authorities worried that coming cold weather in fall and winter could make a bad situation even worse. Yet while many are following the order to leave, others say they have nowhere else to go, and are willing to take responsibility for their own lives regardless of the cost. The Ukrainian president warned that the more people leave the region now, "the fewer people the Russian army will have time to kill.”

New York state prison authorities have lifted a ban on a book about the 1971 Attica uprising following a First Amendment lawsuit. Author Heather Ann Thompson, a historian and professor at the University of Michigan, sued the state’s prisons in March in Manhattan federal court over the censorship of her book “Blood in the Water: The Attica Uprising of 1971.” Prison official said last week in a letter to a Manhattan federal judge that they would dismiss the ban, but will cut out a two-page map from all copies for security purposes.
A new round of U.S. sanctions targeting Russian elites includes a woman named in news reports as Vladimir Putin’s longtime romantic partner. The Treasury Department says the government has frozen the visa of Alina Kabaeva, an Olympic gymnast in her youth and a former member of the state Duma, and imposed other property restrictions. The U.S. government says Kabaeva is also the head of a Russian national media company that promotes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Critics of the Kremlin and imprisoned Russian rights campaigner Alexey Navalny have been calling for sanctions against Kabaeva, saying her news outlet took the lead in portraying Western commentary on the invasion as a disinformation campaign.
Spanish authorities say that its leading scientific research body suffered a cyberattack that appears to have its origin in Russia. Spain’s science ministry says that the Spanish National Research Council was targeted by the ransomware attack on July 16-17. A preliminary analysis by Spain’s cybersecurity authorities said that it appears that no sensitive or confidential information was extracted. The security protocols activated to ensure that the attack was unsuccessful have left several of the council’s research centers off-line.
The Cyprus Health Ministry says a 40-year-old man is the east Mediterranean island nation's first confirmed monkeypox case. The ministry said Tuesday the case was detected after the man underwent a laboratory test at the Cypriot capital's General Hospital. The individual has a history of travel abroad and has exhibited “clinical symptoms compatible the monkeypox disease." The patient has been admitted to a specially modified ward at Nicosia General Hospital for treatment.

The woman who was in Daunte Wright’s vehicle when he was fatally shot by police in a Minneapolis suburb last year is suing the city and the former officer who killed him. The lawsuit says 21-year-old Alayna Albrecht-Payton of St. Paul was physically and mentally injured when Wright’s vehicle crashed after Kim Potter shot him on April 11, 2021. Potter has said she mistook her firearm for her Taser when she fired at the 20-year-old Black man during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center. Potter, who is white, was convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter in his death and sentenced to two years in prison.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are holding onto one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. The team has re-signed veteran Chris Boswell to a five-year deal that carries a total value of just over $23 million. Boswell was entering the final season of a four-year extension he signed before the 2018 season. The signing gives Boswell some stability and the Steelers one of the most reliable kickers in the league. The 31-year-old has made more than 88% of his field-goal attempts since making the team through an open tryout during the 2015 season. Sri Lanka's president says COVID-19 cases and deaths are rising in the country, and citizens should receive a fourth vaccine dose to prevent a possible surge of the coronavirus. President Ranil Wickremesinghe says there were only three reported COVID-19 deaths in June. That rose to 35 in July, including 28 who succumbed after July 18. There were 283 confirmed cases in June and 1,616 in July, he said. Wickremesinghe says less than 23,000 people have received a fourth vaccine dose, compared to 8 million who received a third dose. Sri Lanka has reported a total of 665,847 confirmed cases and 16,559 deaths from the virus.

The crypto division of the financial services company Robinhood will pay a $30 million penalty to New York state for failing to comply with regulations governing money laundering and cybersecurity. The state’s Department of Financial Services said Tuesday that an examination of Robinhood Crypto’s operations from Jan. 24, 2019, through Sept. 30, 2019, found serious compliance deficiencies. Among other issues, department officials said the company failed to provide a dedicated phone number for consumer complaints on its website. Robinhood associate general counsel Cheryl Crumpton says the company has made significant progress in complying with banking regulations.

The gunmaker Smith & Wesson is facing new scrutiny from Congress. The House Oversight panel subpoenaed the company Tuesday for documents related to the manufacture and sale of AR-15-style guns. The move came after Smith & Wesson's CEO refused to appear for a hearing on the firearms frequently used in mass shootings. The committee said the Massachusetts company's CEO Mark P. Smith originally agreed to testify along with the heads of two other companies, but abruptly canceled. Democratic Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney of New York says the company also hasn’t provided all the information the committee needs for its investigation into gunmaker profits from AR-15-style weapons.
A former parishioner at a Massachusetts church has filed a lawsuit alleging he was sexually abused as a child more than 30 years ago by a Roman Catholic priest who is now an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The lawsuit filed Monday in Boston says the plaintiff was a 12-year-old parishioner at Saint Mary of the Sacred Heart Parish in Lynn in 1989 and 1990 when he was sexually assaulted about 25 times by Paul Fitzpatrick Russell. The Archdiocese of Detroit in a statement said Russell denies the allegations. He has been placed on limited ministerial duty.

Neil Heslin testified Tuesday that he fears for his life because of Jones' claims. Heslin and Scarlett Lewis are the parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis. They're seeking at least $150 million in the case against Jones. The conspiracy theorist was not in court Tuesday morning when Heslin began testifying, but Jones is expected to testify later in the day in the case. The 2012 attack killed 20 first-graders and six staffers at the Connecticut school.

Republican Tim Michels has spent nearly $12 million of his own money on his run for Wisconsin governor, campaign finance reports filed ahead of next week’s primary election show. Michels is endorsed by Donald Trump in the race where he faces former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and state Rep. Tim Ramthun. Michels is co-owner of Michels Corp., the state’s largest construction company. Reports filed with the state on Monday show that Michels spent another $4 million of his own money in July on the race, bringing his total spent so far to just under $12 million, or about $1 million a week since he got into the race.
Researchers believe they have uncovered at a battle site in New Jersey the remains of as many as 12 Hessian soldiers who fought during the Revolutionary War. Scientists from Rowan University and county officials announced the discovery Tuesday at Red Bank Battlefield Park. The remains rested in a trench for 245 years until a human femur was found during a archaeological dig in June. Officials believe the skeletal remains are part of a mass grave of Hessian soldiers who were killed by Colonial forces during the 1777 Battle of Red Bank. Scientists hope to eventually find their descendants.
